Synacor has just released the latest version of its Zimbra Collaboration software (ZCS) and it’s a good one! So here’s a Zimbra Collaboration Update 8.8 !
There are some new and some improved features that make this release (ZCS 8.8) a great candidate for upgrades and new deployments. Zimbra ZCS is broken into two main products: Zimbra Network Edition (NE) (licensed) and Zimbra Open Source Edition (OSE) which is free. Check out what features are included in each release.
Since its first release in 2005, Zimbra ZCS has grown to a mature full-featured email client that will stand up in a head-to-head comparison to any over-the-counter competing product such as Outlook. From a system administrator’s perspective, Zimbra is just extremely stable and very complete in its management facilities. This discussion therefore focuses just on some of the new features – “show me the goodies!!”

Zimbra chat : bugs fixed
One of the features that was introduced as an “early release” in R8.7.6 GA is Zimbra Chat, a peer-to-peer chat function. The bugs have been fixed in Zimbra collaboration update 8.8 and it’s enabled in the OS Edition which is cool. Chat sessions pop up in individual face-book style windows you can easily minimize and it offers the standard features: emoticons, chat history and the option to send your conversation as an email.
Zimbra drive : integration with Nextcloud
Another feature that comes for free in the OSE version is Zimbra Drive, which allows integration into a private cloud service. At Syloé we’ve integrated Zimbra ZCS with Nextcloud, another great Open Source solution available on their website. Benefits are that big files will automatically be sent as URLs and you don’t have to worry about file syncing between mobile and desktop apps.

Existing modules improved
In this Zimbra Collaboration update 8,.8 we’d like to include some improvements to existing modules/zimlets as well. Zimbra Backup now backs up calendar items, tags, preferences in addition to emails, and allows recovery on a different zimbra platform to support migration of data. Zimbra Mobile ActiveSync now synchronizes all shared resources (email, calendars, contact lists and tasks). A new module is Hierarchical Storage Management (Zimbra HSM) ; a solution for system administrators to manage multiple data volumes, with efficient data-compression and de-duplication features. It integrates into S3 for cloud-based volumes. The other big thing for system administrators is the Delegated Admin module which allows for granular control of delegated administration, with detailed activity logging.
